Just mention the names of Hergé, Peyo, Franquin and Morris, and Tintin and Snowy, the Smurfs, Gaston Lagaffe, and Lucky Luke spring to mind...
Along with their many colleagues living in Wallonia or in Brussels, these artists brought about a real cultural revolution that helped comic strips win their spurs and ensure that they enjoyed a popular success without precedent in Europe.
